The film is being screened tonight at the Gala of Hope fundraiser
Hope Arises Project Inc. is hosting its first-ever Gala of Hope tonight at the Algonquin Theatre in Huntsville. The evening kicks off at 6:30 with a ribbon skirt fashion show, live drumming, Indigenous food and a screening of the locally shot short film Red Girl Rising.
The film, which tells the story of Joyce Jonathan Crone and her journey of reconciliation, has been nominated for Best Short Documentary at the Red National Film Festival, one of the largest digital film festivals in the world. Producer Faith Howe says the nomination shines a light on the work of Crone and the entire Huntsville community, showing what’s possible when everyone is committed to reconciliation.
Crone says the recognition is surreal. “Living the dream with Red Girl Rising and living my purpose, being a role model for others, on this world stage is something I never thought I would ever do,” she says.
All funds from the gala will support Indigenous youth programs, including a birch bark canoe build and community mental wellness initiatives.
