District Backs Huntsville’s Push for Smaller Rural Lots

Thursday, 25 September 2025 08:15

Despite staff concerns, Huntsville councillors secured District approval to cut rural residential lot sizes.

Huntsville won District approval for a controversial change to the town’s Official Plan. The amendment lowers the minimum rural residential lot size from nearly five acres down to one acre, with road frontage reduced from 134 metres to 60.

Local and District planning staff warned of environmental risks and urged a slower approach, but Huntsville councillors argued the move supports their housing action plan and helps families create affordable lots.

Despite the debate, District councillors backed the change after a long discussion, giving Huntsville the green light to move ahead.
