Road salt is a leading contributor to rising chloride levels
A new report from Friends of the Muskoka Watershed highlights the impact of local citizen scientists in identifying sources of road salt pollution across the region.
Eight volunteers collected data at 27 locations over two years, helping pinpoint key contributors to rising chloride levels in Muskoka lakes. The study, conducted by science director Dr. Neil Hutchinson, confirms that areas with major highways or urban development show the most concerning levels.
The findings will support the group’s SALTYMuskoka education program, aimed at reducing salt use and protecting local waterways.
