Province buys dedicated track for Northlander

Monday, 16 March 2026 09:34

The 205km stretch of track will prioritize passenger service

The Ontario government is moving closer to bringing back passenger rail in the north, and local MPP Graydon Smith is highlighting the impact for his region.

Smith says the recent $138 million purchase of 205 kilometres of track between North Bay and Washago shows the government’s commitment to giving residents in Parry Sound—Muskoka another travel option. He adds that the acquisition, which secures a dedicated corridor for the Northlander, brings the long-awaited return of passenger rail one step closer.

The corridor will prioritize passenger service while still supporting freight traffic, aiming to improve reliability and connectivity across Northern Ontario.
