Police are issuing a sharp reminder to Ontario drivers about the dangers of passing a stopped school bus.
Central Region OPP say too many motorists are ignoring the law that requires drivers to stop at least 20 metres back when a bus has its red lights flashing and stop arm out — in both directions, unless there’s a median.
The penalties are steep: fines ranging from $400 to $4,000, six demerit points, and even possible jail time for repeat offenders. Vehicle owners can also be charged, even if they weren’t behind the wheel.
Drivers are urged to stay alert in school zones, watch for children during morning and afternoon travel times, and avoid distractions.
Anyone who sees a vehicle illegally passing a bus is asked to call 9-1-1 with details.
