Police release the identity of a body found in 1980

Thursday, 4 September 2025 14:56

The man was last seen in 1973

More than four decades after human remains were found in Algonquin Park, OPP say the mystery has finally been solved.

A hiker discovered the remains near the Hardwood Lookout Trail back in 1980. Despite years of investigation, the man’s identity remained unknown until OPP used investigative genetic genealogy to trace DNA through family members.

Police have now confirmed the remains belong to Eric “Ricky” Singer of Cleveland, Ohio, who was last seen in 1973. His family recently travelled to Algonquin Park to visit the place where he spent his final days.

Investigators say the breakthrough shows how new DNA technology is helping solve historic cases and provide long-awaited answers for families.
