The changes relate to alcohol and drug impairments
The Huntsville OPP is alerting drivers to changes to impaired and alcohol-related driving penalties, effective January 1, 2026.
Police say first offences will now carry a seven-day roadside licence suspension, up from three days, while second offences will carry 14 days, up from seven. These changes apply to young and novice drivers with zero-tolerance, or those failing Standard Field Sobriety Tests.
The look-back period for previous alcohol or drug-related occurrences will also be extended from five years to 10 years when determining sanctions, including licence suspensions, administrative penalties, ignition interlock requirements, and remedial programs.
Drivers receiving their first roadside suspension must complete a remedial education program, while second or subsequent offences require participation in a treatment program.
