Police are calling for more diligence on the water
The OPP says there was a spike in marine incidents across the province this past weekend, prompting a renewed call for water safety.
Police from multiple detachments were dispatched to several emergencies on lakes and rivers, many involving impaired operation, inexperience, and missing lifejackets.
Officers say most fatalities they investigate come from capsized boats or people falling overboard — and in many cases, no one was wearing a lifejacket.
With July and August being the busiest months on the water, the OPP is urging the public to take precautions to prevent tragedy.
