Ontario Government watching for Chronic Wasting Disease in white-tailed deer

Tuesday, 23 September 2025 07:35

The province is asking hunters to submit samples from harvested white-tailed deer

The Ontario government is calling on hunters to help with surveillance for chronic wasting disease in white-tailed deer.

The fatal brain disease affects members of the deer family and has not yet been detected in Ontario, but it is present in nearby provinces and U.S. states.

This fall, ministry staff will collect tissue samples from deer in parts of Central and Southwestern Ontario for testing.

Hunters can also drop off deer heads at freezer depots from October to December.
