MAHC introduces direct billing for First Nations patients

Thursday, 10 September 2026 07:47

The healthcare organization will now direct bill the federal government

Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare is changing how some First Nations and Inuit patients pay for services covered through the federal Non-Insured Health Benefits program.

Eligible patients will no longer have to pay upfront and wait for reimbursement for approved services, including ambulance transportation and certain medical supplies and equipment.

The MAHC says it will now bill the federal program directly, reducing paperwork and financial pressure on patients and families.

The change follows concerns from Indigenous communities about delays and financial hardship under the previous system.
