Magnetawan’s municipal expropriation saga appears to be nearing a resolution. Mayor Sam Dunnett has been meeting with Council members regarding the controversial Expropriation Bylaw.
This comes after the municipality provided new clarification on the property in question—the former site of the Downtown General Store and June's Restaurant, destroyed by fire in 2011. Municipal staff confirmed that since the fire, no site plan, building permit, or detailed proposal for a new building has ever been officially received.
An application to permit outdoor storage on the property was denied by Council in 2021 and upheld by the Ontario Land Tribunal in 2023. While a basic sketch for a "proposed building" was emailed in September of this year, staff noted it lacked essential details like setbacks and intended use.
Mayor Dunnett has now directed the Clerk to prepare a motion to officially rescind the Expropriation Bylaw at the Council meeting scheduled for October 8th.
