The funds will be used for new and upgraded equipment

Fire departments across Muskoka are receiving a provincial funding boost aimed at improving firefighter safety and emergency response.

More than $380,000 from Ontario’s Fire Protection Grant is being shared among the district’s six municipalities.

Bracebridge is receiving almost $33K for bunker gear, particulate hoods and firefighter decontamination supplies to help reduce cancer risks. Georgian Bay will get over $52K for fit-testing equipment, breathing apparatus facepieces and hose-cleaning tools.

Gravenhurst will get over $51K for new protective gear, while Huntsville will receive $30K for spare turnout gear and a new extractor to wash contaminated equipment.

Lake of Bays will get $52K for washer extractors and upgraded firefighting suits and Muskoka Lakes receives the largest share — $164k — for gear-cleaning equipment, additional bunker gear and specialized nozzles designed to cool lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicle fires.
