A contractor and homeowner were charged for starting working without permits
The Township of Lake of Bays is cracking down on illegal construction after a homeowner and contractor were fined a total of $14,000 for starting work without the proper permits.
The homeowner was fined $10,000 for violating the Ontario Building Code and Planning Act, while the contractor received a $4,000 fine for a Planning Act offence.
Township officials say this serves as a reminder that all construction projects—like docks, decks, sheds, and septic work—require permits before work begins.
Chief Building Official Taeke Peereboom warns that ignoring the rules can lead to stop-work orders, fines, and costly requirements to undo unpermitted construction. Residents are encouraged to contact Building and Planning Services before starting any project to avoid penalties.
