Huntsville to host meeting between PM and Premiers

Friday, 11 July 2025 14:47

The meeting comes as President Trump threatens 35% tariffs

Huntsville will host a high-stakes meeting next week as Prime Minister Mark Carney sits down with Canada’s premiers to respond to U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat of 35 per cent tariffs on Canadian imports.

The July 22 meeting, part of the annual Council of the Federation conference, comes as Ottawa works to strike a trade deal before Trump’s August 1 deadline. Trump says tariff relief depends on Canada’s efforts to curb fentanyl at the border.

The Prime Minister’s Office says Canada will defend workers and businesses. Ontario’s Doug Ford is calling for a united front, while Alberta’s Danielle Smith warns against retaliation.
