Health Unit urges caution for people at risk

Thursday, 16 July 2026 07:24

The health unit says residents should limit their exposure to wildfire smoke

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit is reminding residents that wildfire smoke can affect everyone's health, even when fires are burning hundreds of kilometres away.

Officials say smoke can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, while more serious symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing and chest pain.

People at higher risk, including children, seniors, pregnant people and those with heart or lung conditions, are encouraged to limit time outdoors, keep indoor air as clean as possible, and monitor local air quality conditions.

The health unit says that if you experience severe symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
