The District converted 90 waste bin sites to curb, and lakeside pickup
The District of Muskoka has received national recognition for its efforts to modernize waste collection services. The Canadian Association of Municipal Administrators has awarded Muskoka its 2026 Environmental Leadership and Sustainability Award for the Bin Site Transition Project.
The multi-year initiative replaced nearly 90 unsupervised waste bin sites with curbside collection, lakeside waste pickup for water-access properties, and improved waste depots. The project affected about 6,000 properties across the district and is expected to keep more than 40,000 bags of recyclable and compostable material out of local landfills each year.
District officials say the project improved environmental protection, modernized waste services, and strengthened relationships with residents throughout Muskoka.
