Huntsville Council will hold a special meeting tomorrow to discuss the installation of a bronze Mahatma Gandhi statue donated by the Consulate General of India.
The over six-foot statue was offered to Huntsville as one of only two Ontario communities selected for its efforts to promote inclusiveness and celebrate diversity. The Consulate says the statue will honor the town’s commitment to dialogue, respect, and peaceful coexistence, while strengthening ties with India.
However, the donation has sparked backlash from some residents questioning why the town accepted it and whether it reflects community priorities.
Staff say the project aligns with the Town’s Strategic Plan and has been reviewed by local arts and cultural groups.
Some councillors have since reconsidered their decision and are calling for more discussion on whether the town should accept the gift.
