Carney says Canada won't sign a deal with the U.S. unless it benefits the country

Wednesday, 23 July 2025 09:18

Carney spoke from Deerhurst Resort

The future of trade between Canada and the U.S. is uncertain — and that could have ripple effects. Prime Minister Mark Carney, speaking yesterday from the first ministers’ meeting here in Huntsville, says his government won’t sign a deal by the August 1 deadline unless it’s one that truly benefits Canadians.

A breakdown could mean more tariffs on goods and pressure on industries like lumber and auto manufacturing, both key to Ontario’s economy. Carney says Canada is also looking to strengthen trade ties beyond the U.S. if a deal falls through.
