The province urges residents to prepare now to avoid bear encounters
As black bears begin emerging from hibernation across Ontario, the province and the Ontario Provincial Police are urging residents to take steps now to avoid dangerous encounters.
With natural food sources still scarce, bears are more likely to be drawn to garbage, bird feeders, and outdoor food scraps. Officials say simple actions can make a big difference — including storing garbage in sealed containers, keeping pet food indoors, cleaning barbecues, and removing bird feeders for the season.
Residents are also reminded never to approach or feed a bear. A 24-hour Bear Wise hotline is now open for non-emergencies at 1-866-514-2327. Aggressive situations should be reported to police immediately.
