Author, STEVE BURROWS Travels and Travails: Researching & Writing the Birder Murder Mystery Series

On Thursday, September 11, Muskoka Authors Association welcomes author and traveling birder, Steve Burrows, to share a light-hearted look at his path from birder and environmental journalist to author of the best-selling 9-book, Birder Murder Mystery series. Tracing connections between the worlds of birding and mystery fiction, Steve will recount some of his adventures on his research trips, look at the reception the series has received from both the birding and non-birding communities, and explore some of the surprising opportunities that have come his way as a result of writing this award-winning series. Steve’s newest book, A Deceit of Lapwings, is just hot off the press.

Steve Burrows first began exploring nature around his childhood home in Birmingham, UK. After emigrating to Canada, he earned degrees from York University (English Literature) and Dalhousie University (Education) before relocating to Hong Kong, where he earned a Master’s degree from the University of Hong Kong in Environmental Management.

Writing assignments have taken him to all seven continents. His freelance articles on birding, travel and environmental issues have appeared in publications around the world, including BBC Wildlife, from whom he received a Nature Writer of the Year award. As a contributing field editor with Asian Geographic, he visited destinations including Taiwan, Sri Lanka, and Papua New Guinea to cover stories on everything from gibbons to silk villages to seahorses. Merging his twin passions of birding and mysteries, Steve later turned his hand to fiction to create the Birder Murder Mysteries. The first title in the series, A Siege of Bitterns, won the Crime Writers of Canada award for Best First Novel, and was selected as one of the Globe & Mail’s Top 100 Books of the Year.

Now a designated ZEISS Field Naturalist, Steve also travels with Adventure Canada as an onboard naturalist and author. He currently lives in Oshawa, Ontario with his wife and muse, Resa.
